Decisions

by BridgetChumbley on September 9, 2009

Does it feel like you can’t make another decision no matter how important it may be? Do you ever get so tired of figuring things out that your brain turns to mush and you can’t choose something as simple as what to cook for dinner or what shoes to put on? There are so many things to decide in any given day that occasionally it begins to weigh us down.

This past week I’ve been contemplating about what direction to take in a few different areas of my life. I envision myself gazing down a long stretch of highway with several routes to pick from. Which road is the one that leads to contentment…I’ll choose that one. What off-ramp will make me most successful… maybe I’ll take that one instead. It seems that no matter what decision I make it leaves me wondering if it’s the right one and if I’m weighing all the options properly.

Times like this are when I long to hear God’s voice speaking to me and telling me what I’m supposed to do next. It makes me think of when God asked Noah to build an ark…there was NO DOUBT about what Noah was supposed to do and which road he should take. I’m not saying it was easy or that Noah didn’t face a mountain of obstacles…but he knew what direction God wanted him to go and he even gave him instructions (lol). I’m certainly not looking to build a boat and grow a beard…but some clarity would be greatly appreciated.

We celebrated our daughters birthday over the weekend and she got to make all the decisions on what I cooked, the movies we watched, and of course what kind of cake to celebrate with. When it was time to pick a movie she took what seemed like hours to select something. I knew it was either going to be Twilight or A Walk to Remember, so it was hard to believe she took so much time to figure it out (sparkly vampires won). I couldn’t help but smile as I watched her putting so much effort into her decision. Then she finally picked one and immediately began to second guess herself because she didn’t want to regret her choice.

I then began to feel that miserable pit in my stomach that reminded me, I too have some choices to make. I want to make sure whatever path I take will ultimately be the best decision for the whole family and that it won’t seriously disrupt our lives. I’ve been on my knees in prayer, hoping for answers to come…though for now I only hear…be patient. This is not the clarity I’ve been yearning for, but I need to humble myself and remember to wait on the Lord…He will guide me and the more I place my trust in Him, the better off I’ll be.

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Isn’t it really more unfair that once you make one decision, there are usually more subsequent decisions to follow? Where’s the easy button?!

I have this picture of the ‘button’ (numbers) in LOST that they had to push… or else ‘kaboom’…that sounds about right! ;)

I have no comment for you dear, just prayers for peace in your decision.

Ah, “be patient” is an answer but not usually a welcome one! God reminded me of 2 Peter 3:9 this Sunday, “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” His promise is true, whether we see the ultimate fulfillment today or years from now. He is patient so we can be patient.

Thanks for sharing!

What a great post, Bridgette. I think we are going through similar decision making journeys right now. Our posts today go hand in hand!

It is so hard to make the “best” decision, because for me, I see something “bad” that can happen. So, I’m learning the best decision I can make is the one made in faith, trusting God is in it with me ALL THE WAY.

For girls like us who just fret over every decision, it helps to know we are not alone. Your post helped me right now! Thanks!

Bonnie that is so funny because I thought the same thing when I read your post today! I needed to hear what you had to say… ;) If we lived closer we’d need to go have a cup of coffee together!!!
Thank you!

Yogi Berra once said, “If you get to a fork in the road, take it.”

I realize this is of absolutely not value to you, but I just thought I’d share. I would rather look back on my life with regrets for the things I did do than regrets for the things I didn’t. Make sense?
