As many of you may have read or heard, we celebrated my daughters birthday last weekend. She got to choose some fun things to do and shockingly (not really), a lot of these choices revolved around food. It started Friday night and continued through Monday (since Monday was a holiday and all). Our food frenzy started off at Whiffies which leads me to today’s Fun Friday post…
If you know our family, or follow the hubby or I on Twitter, you have undoubtedly heard us mention Whiffies. I’ve been asked many times…what exactly is Whiffies…so the time has come to answer this extremely important question. Whiffies makes/sells deep fried pies that can be filled with any number of delectable and scrumptious fillings. There are the savory pies which consist of a variety of flavors…there are vegan options, as well as brisket, chicken pot pie, or whatever ‘creation’ they come up with on any given night.

My son and hubby love the savory pies, but my fave are the sweet ones! Some of the de-lish pies I’ve happily consumed are: lemon, lemon creme, apple, cherry, coconut creme, peanut butter creme with chocolate chips, (extra yummy) and blueberry.
Going to Whiffies is half of the ‘fun’…they are located in downtown Portland in a parking lot full of food carts. For my OCD family this is a pretty big stretch…the hubby doesn’t care, but the kids and I normally wouldn’t have dared to try something like this under ‘normal’ circumstances.
Let me explain…first off it’s in Portland (oooh, scary…we live in The Couve where it’s safe-LOL), second…hello, it is a food cart (a tiny trailer IN A PARKING LOT people), and lastly…they are fried pies (I worry about cholesterol and calories…usually), so this endeavor was a very BIG step for me. Fortunately we became friends with the genius behind Whiffies pies, and thanks to this relationship I overcame my ‘concerns’ and gave it a try…boy am I happy to have stepped out of my comfort zone or I would have missed out on some delicious treats and lots of fun times!

There are always interesting people to watch, (we’ve seen people in costumes, a couple who had just been married, there was a karaoke night, and one time we witnessed some ‘unusual’ street performers singing about the ShamWow…wow!). If the pies aren’t enough for you…the entertainment is priceless!
Now that your mouth is watering and you are either craving a Whiffies pie (if you’ve been fortunate enough to have tried one already), or you wish you lived closer so you could got check them out…let me leave you with this invitation…if you come to Portland let us know and we’ll be there…we are always looking for an excuse to stop by (please hurry)!

This week we’ve been in food ‘detox’ from the birthday festivities (never fear the son has a birthday in 2 weeks so it will begin again) and we still have a couple pieces of ice cream cake in the freezer (probably not by the time you read this). Since it is Fun Friday, I’m going to share a video with you of a song the kids sang ALL weekend that is now embedded in my brain (please make it stop)!
Enjoy! Oh and happy birthday one last time until next year, baby girl!

My goodness, that sounds absolutely delicious. They should franchise this and put one in Juneau. Maybe you could tell the owner for me!
I’ll see what I can do!
Yummy! BTW today is my little one’s birthday 13years old. Hope you are doing great. (Iknow you are)
Happy Birthday! My kids are both September so we’re almost done for another year…whew! Remember when we were around that age? Wow, it was close to when we met…
Okay Bridget, now you’re just being cruel. You go from tweeting about fried pies to blogging about it? What are you going to do next? Send out smell-0-vision? I WANT FRIED PIES!
Oh, why, oh, why did I click play on that video?? Now MY kids are singing it….
Good post. Too bad we are 3000 miles away

Sorry, Ginny. It is one of those songs that sticks in your head and it won’t go away!
Really. Fried pies.
I thought I had heard of everything when they started deep frying Twinkies an Snickers on a stick at the Iowa State Fair. Only in Portland would they have a “vegan fried pie!” But if I’m ever there again, I’ll have to give it a shot. I’ll try (most) anything once.
dang it, bridget, if you and dale don’t quit going on and on about the pies, i’m going to finally have to break down and get one! sheesh, can’t a girl get a break, just once?! and as for the song, please give us warning next time. i hate that commercial. evil baskin and robbins. evil.
oh, and candy, i can see seattle having vegan fried pies, too…possibly at the big co-op market, lol.
Oh….it will be worth it, Riss. It is far enough away for you that even once you love it…it won’t be too close to home…LOL
One of these days I will make it to @Whiffies, really I will.
