With Halloween just around the corner, I felt the need to repost this story. This was a huge event that we still have ‘nightmares’ about on a continual basis in our home…
There is a new video at the bottom that we now love… but don’t know who he is or what it means!
My Fun Friday story this week involves our 11 year old daughter. Mind you this event wasn’t very funny at the time, though it gets more humorous as time passes. In October she came in our room late one night to inform us that a “bug” was keeping her awake. This was an odd thing to hear so I walked her down the hall figuring she’d been dreaming. I sat on her bed impatiently waiting to hear this “infamous” chirping bug. I waited for what felt like an hour (probably only 90 seconds) and then tucked her in telling her I’d close the door since the bug probably escaped while she was in my room and that way it couldn’t get back in.
What felt like only moments later (about 3 hours in reality), I woke up to hear her door slam and footsteps booking it towards my room. I sat up about the time she reached the doorway… “Mom I got bit by that bug,” she announced. I had her show me the bite and asked if she’d actually seen the bug. She proceeded to show me her finger and said she hadn’t in fact seen the “attacker”. I was extremely perplexed at what was going on and could see a tiny pin size hole which confused me further. Being the brave mom I am I woke up my snoring husband and sent him to investigate. I told him she closed her door so the perpetrator should still be inside. He wasn’t impressed but did go in to find nothing and quickly returned to his comatose state.
The next day we were in and out of her room a few times and as night approached I remembered I’d torn up her bed looking for the “bug” and needed to fix it. When I opened her door I saw something flying around that looked significantly larger than the “bug” I’d been searching for. As reality set in and my courage returned I started screaming until the rest of the family got upstairs. By this point I was hiding in my room where the kids joined me as my husband went to check things out once again. He then confirmed our biggest fear…the “bug” was actually a BAT! Our daughter was terrified as she realized the “bug” that she swatted out of her hair in those early hours was actually a bat that had “nested”.
That little guy was sure good at hiding and watching my hubby with gloves, goggles and tennis racket in hand while on the hunt was quite humorous in retrospect. The unfortunate part is that our daughter had to go through a series of shots for rabies which was miserable, though she handled it like a trooper. She can now travel just about anywhere in the world or wrestle a rabid dog (you never know) and be safe.
The lesson learned from this as a mom is when your child wakes you up in the night worried there is a “bug” in her room…maybe you shouldn’t solve the problem by closing the door and leaving her inside (just sayin’).
I found this video… How could anyone be afraid of something so cute? (Though I have no idea what he is singing… )

Their fears are so real to them, aren’t they? And founded, in your story. What a story?! I’ve read about your trust carnival on other blogs. I’m probably too late, but am curious to go check it out.
My eyes are still wide open…A BAT! Once on vacation, Kermit’s eye got sizzled by a lightbulb and Miss Piggy got a bat stuck in her hair, but none of the children had a BUG like that! This story will stick.

I’m really glad you stopped by, Wendy. The blog posts on Trust are still up…. please go check them out. There were some really thought provoking ones!
Ack. Talk about a hard-learned lesson. I suppose when they come to get you often enough you learn to ignore them, the whole crying wolf-thing.” But then you have the ONE time that it’s real…
That one didn’t win me the nomination for mom of the year… *sigh* What else is new? haha
I couldn’t see the video for some reason.
But WOW. She got BITTEN by a BAT in her room? I bet she can’t watch Scooby Doo ever again!
(Was it a vampire bat? Those aren’t native to the States, are they?)
If it was a vampire bat, we’re assuming her transformation would be complete by this Halloween!
Poor her. Poor you.
Hindsight is 20/20. Now you think how things could have been done differently, but at the time, dealing with it seemed the best option. Had it been a bug, it would have been.
I’ll tell you a secret…My hubby is scared of spiders and bugs. Not rodents or flying bats (like me) but bugs, yes.
I don’t like any of them!
I’m glad to see a kindred soul in your husband. I’m the ‘investigator/bug catcher’ in my household also, but I might hesitate if the pest were a flying rodent.
I hate rats…
Glad this story turn out for the better. But, your daughter will always have an “I told you so” card to play…lol.
Bleh- this creeps me out. If I were your husband I probably would’ve got me a full haz-mat suit. I hate mouse traps (w/ mice in them) too, BTW. I need to go take a shower now…
jamba batty !
This whole story gives me the heebie jeebies. I’m pretty sure I’d be moving in with a sibling after that!
Have a great weekend.
Yes, both kids slept on our bedroom floor for several nights (why?)…
You have a nice weekend too!
i’ve seen the cute bat before. i think it’s a european cartoon. i’m gonna go with france, since that’s the motel we had cable in… but i might have just come across videos of it online… in any case, he is a cute little bugger, that’s for sure. too bad real bats don’t dance around all cuddly and happy like that.
Now tell me again how you lost out on that Mother of the Year award…? Bats… Who knew? I think I’d be screaming about that one, too. Gives me the heebie-geebies just thinking about it.
That must have been terrifying for everyone! We had one flying around our apartment when I was pregnant w/ my son, and made my husband go catch it… scariest (yet funniest) thing ever!
I’m not sure what to say other than, “Oh, my!” And, “Wow!” I may even have nightmares about this one.
Great story, Bridget! Have a great weekend.
