So as most of you know, the theme on my blog is… One Word at a Time. I’ve begun to make Fun Friday fit into this ‘structure’ as well, by making the titles consist of only ‘one word’. So, this week I thought I’d pick a word above all others…songs have been written about this word… and it’s really just…timeless. Are you ready…
(BTW…I so do not endorse this show, but this cracks me up!)
Now that you’ve heard that the ‘bird’ is the word, I’ll share a personal, funny and extremely embarrassing story about my life. When I was in elementary school, one day a friend (I use this term loosely), yelled to me from across the playground (in about 5th grade). It came out really fast (and loud), and let’s just say that it didn’t sound like ‘Bridget’. It sounded much more like “Bird S***”. Well, from that day forward, my nickname (not only at school, but at home), became ‘Bird’.

Occasionally, my mom will post a comment on this blog and call me ‘Bird’…I realize this is supposed to be a term of endearment…but come on…it derived from a incident that pretty much scarred me for life! The other nickname I had was ‘Pogo-Stick’ (maiden name was Pogue & I was a stick), and I thought that was bad…
This past week, I’ve been recalling how even though this nickname came about by a ‘slip of the tongue’…I felt like it was a personal attack on my nose. I always felt it looked more like a beak, and this nickname didn’t help those insecurities. Now, over 30 years later (how is that possible…I’m much too young), it looks like I may have a fractured beak nose. I always said I’d never have any work done on my bod…but if I did, it would be my nose. I fantasized about breaking it and ‘having’ to get it ‘fixed’. Now that this could be a reality…I totally regret ever thinking those thoughts (LOL).
I doubt that the wayward elbow incident is going to result in me having a Katherine Heigl nose (or anything else Katherine Heigl), but it has given me a good laugh at the irony of it all (is this really ironic @katdish? I’m not sure…).
So in closing…I’ll leave you all with these life altering ‘words’…

Just so you know, my youngest laughed her head off at the video. “Again, again, mommy!” Thaaaaanks (didn’t you do this to me once before?) Perhaps I should only read your posts when they are not within earshot? Haha.
Personally, I think you are beautiful. And being someone who was also teased mercilessly during those school years, I feel your pain. You are braver than I, however. I have zero desire to ever post about my name calling experiences
) But thanks for sharing yours.
Just went to pick up oldest from school… Conversation in the car: Youngest: “Mommy played video on her pooter (computer), it was SO funny. You have to see it!” Oldest: ” ….Mommy? Can you show me when we get home? Pleeeeeease?” Lots of giggling followed…
Thanks, Bridget

Sorry! My kids want to watch it over and over, too! It’s catchy…and completely annoying!
I hope that nose of yours is all fixed up soon! I need to go dance now… The bird bird bird, the bird is the word…
LOL! I love the nickname story!
That’s pretty funny (I always think it’s good to turn tragedy into comedy).
I can’t see the clip, but maybe I’ll remember to look it up when I get home!
The video is great, and goes so well with this story (especially the last second – eeek!) I’m sorry about your nose. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to hope you have to get it fixed or not. It sounds really, really painful. I’m not much on pain. So, I’ll just say a quick prayer that it all turns out for the very best. (I’m still cringing at the pain of it all!)
Have a great Saturday!
