What a wonderful way to start Valentine’s Weekend… with a post about humor, laughter, and love!
My parents raised me to laugh at myself (why not, everyone else was)… which gave me really thick skin, and what I’d like to think is a pretty good and well rounded sense of humor.
I appreciate the approach they’ve taken in life… when the going gets the toughest… this is when they try to laugh the loudest!
Happy Anniversary… I love you both!
Here’s where their story began… written by my mom.
FORTY TWO YEARS AND COUNTING
Recently Bridget shared with you, a poem my husband wrote me for our fortieth anniversary. Time flies, and on February 24th we will have been married forty-two years… in a row… no vacations! As my husband says… twelve of them were good ones!
Many people want to know what makes a marriage last this long. What is the secret to success?
It is very simple… A good sense of humor!
I really mean this. Let me give you some examples:
I was eighteen, and he was twenty when we married. I was Catholic, and he had been raised Baptist. About twenty minutes before leaving for the Church, Jim’s mother reminded him that at a Catholic wedding all they would see of him was the back of his head, and the bottom of his feet. She told him that he better go get a haircut and new shoes.
This caused him to show up twenty minutes late. Next, the florist handed me my bouquet, but instead of having roses… it was all white carnations… identical to my Maid of Honors. It appeared my mother changed the order and didn’t tell me.
Laugh or cry was my choice… I chose to laugh. I picked up that bouquet, took my Father’s arm, and started down the aisle.
As we started down the center aisle I stopped. My father whispered in my ear, “Just keep going, I know it’s not the music you picked but… ”
“Dad, where did the streamers come from?”
“The what?”
Hanging from the ceiling of the Church were red, white and green crepe streamers for the Mexican Fiesta to be held that afternoon at the Church.
“I have no idea,” replied my stunned father. “Do you want to call this off?”
“Of course not, can’t you see I’m smiling?!”
I have no idea what music I walked down the aisle to, and when I reached my Prince Charming his knees were knocking! When he said “I DO” no one could hear him but me… but then I was the only one who needed to!
Later that day we lost my bouquet, my Dad gave the hubby a black eye, the best man got thrown into the pool… AND we had dinner at Tasty Freeze.
All that, and he still loves me… Happy Anniversary, Jim!

It’s all too true. You start into marriage thinking it’s going to be perfection — and you get confronted with red, white and green streamers. (In our case, the ceremony might have lasted six minutes, and the reception barely an hour — they had to rush us out of the church for the revival that was starting at 7 p.m.) Great post.
I love this! You should link up with Flashback Friday with Jo over at: http://mainelymyles.blogspot.com/
Her theme is love today — this fits!
What a wonderful story. I can hear the laughter. Your mother and father give you a great model: It works!
God bless you both.
All those little details that were soooo important to get JUST right… I can’t remember the half of them. I do have a good man though. I remember that.
Thanks Sweetie and you found the photo!
xoxo

Loved this story and the point behind it. I agree 100%! Thanks.
Bridget,
I love this story! This is always my approach too. I have to share this link with you, it’s the toast from a wedding. I know it’s about 10 years too late for me, but I wish this had been toasted at mine!

This is great. Talk about having to be flexible. I know some brides who would have flipped out!
Bridget… talk her into doing a blog of her own. We all could learn something from her!
