One Word at a Time…Laughter
The most wasted of all days is one without laughter.
~e.e. cummings
Laughter…
the chuckle of your friends while sharing an inside joke.
the giggle of your baby as you tickle his toes.
the hoot of your grandpa after he tells a silly story.
the snicker of your teen in the midst of a lecture.
the snort that makes you laugh harder than the joke.
the cackle your mother-in-law makes when she’s happy.
the snigger at your son’s hilarious (albeit questionable) jokes.
the hysterics during dinner as the fam shares crazy stories.
There are so many forms of laughter. It can be spontaneous, forced, contagious… though whatever kind it is… it always makes us feel better.
I know many of us say we can either laugh or cry in certain situations. Obviously, if we can laugh our way through the difficult times… it’s much easier (and healthier) than the alternative.
God has given us so many wonderful things to enjoy in this life. Delicious flavors, awesome aromas, breath-taking views…
He knows life isn’t always easy, but has provided us with lots of ways to experience joy, even in the midst of trials and struggles.
Are you able to remove yourself from the financial problems, relationship issues, parenting struggles, etc… long enough to stop and appreciate how deeply our Heavenly Father loves us?
Allowing us the pleasure of hugging our child… kissing our spouse… smelling some flowers… eating a cookie straight out of the oven… watching/listening/feeling the waves of the ocean crashing on the shore.
A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person’s strength. Proverbs 17:22
Then there’s one of my all time favorite blessings… laughter. Whether your watching someone else laugh, or let out a hearty chortle from your innermost being… laughter truly is… the best medicine!

Laughter truly is the best medicine. There is a time for everything to be sure, but no matter how down I’m feeling, I honestly can’t remember the last time I went for more than a day without laughter. For that, I am so very grateful.
I tell great puns, but no one in my family laughs. They just groan.
Thanks for sponsoring this.
I agree. Laughter is good medicine.
Do we really understand and believe how much God loves us? If we did, I bet we’d see more laughter.
Great post. And thanks for creating the space for some wonderful blog posts on laughter (not to mention the other One Word Carnivals).
I love that you wrote that no matter ‘the cause’, laughter always makes us feel better.
It’s so true.
Just writing my piece this morning, I felt better.
And, it reminded me, I’ve been indulging in the dark side for a tad too long recently.
Time to get me some laughter into my life!
thanks for sponsoring this Bridget — and I like the idea of every two weeks. You keep sharpening my wits and my writing with these challenges!
Amen to cheerful hearts!
And let’s pray for contagious joy as well.
Good stuff, Bridget. It’s always fun and interesting to get so many perspectives!
B, you were asking whether to continue with every two weeks or go to once a month. I say to continue every two weeks so that we keep the momentum going. We all know that if we CAN’T post, we can easily take a week off, so I don’t think burn-out should be an issue. (Unless you’re the one burning out. If you are, let me know and I’ll take it a week or two to give you a break. And I’m so technologically inept that that’s a big offer I’m making!) I’ll be thinking about topics. Hope some others chime in, too. If not, let’s start twitter-harrassing them.
Sometimes when I read wisdom and swellness I just want to reach through and big rocking hug my new favorite blogger. You make me want to hug you.
My wife says I’m a loud belly laugher…
I consider that a gift from God.
You’re right, Bridget. Laughter is more than pleasurable. It can be employed for the soul’s health.
One of my favorite uses for laughter? Some years back, we recorded America’s Funniest Videos during my pregnancies. When my labor started, I watched them to help me relax and keep distracted. Way healthier than pain meds.
Thanks for those who expressed their opinions about the carnivals. It seems between the comments here and the facebook responses that we’ll keep them on an every 2 week schedule for now.
I will try and have a new schedule posted by the next carnival at the latest.
I appreciate the comments as well. You guys are the greatest!
